Fly with Clarity. Don't Wing It.

By Dr. Samuel Jones, CSP

Recently, I boarded a flight home from Little Rock, Arkansas. As I settled into my seat near the front, I noticed the flight attendant stopped two young boys and invited them to meet the pilots.

The boys stepped up to the cockpit door in awe. Even if they did not understand all the gauges, dials, and screens, I could see the pride in their faces as they walked back down the aisle. In that moment, they connected with something bigger by dreaming that maybe, one day, they could be the ones in the pilot's seat.

This experience made me think about the clients I work with.

Those boys were gazing at an instrument panel filled with purpose, even if they could not fully grasp how it all worked together. It reminded me of how many leaders today attempt to guide teams and organizations without the real-time feedback that pilots rely on for every flight.

Pilots have instruments and gauges for:

  • Altitude and airspeed readings are necessary to determine their precise location.
  • Constant communication with air traffic control to avoid danger.
  • Warning lights to alert them before a problem becomes a crisis.

Most importantly, pilots do not guess. They do not "wing it." They operate with precision because they have a reliable support system and a clear dashboard that tells them where they are, where they are going, and the safest way to get there.

Unfortunately, many leaders are trying to take their teams to a destination without:

  • A clear vision (altitude)
  • Tools to measure their progress (speed)
  • A system to identify their resources (fuel)
  • A strategy to detect problems early (warning lights)

This is why I developed the Momentum Mindset® framework. It serves as a leadership "instrument panel" and "air traffic control system" all in one. For example, it supports leaders with:

  • A preflight briefing plan before takeoff.
  • Clear altitude to define your vision and destination to avoid collisions.
  • Speed indicators to track your progress toward key goals.
  • Fuel gauges to manage energy and resources.
  • Warning lights to identify and address challenges before they escalate.

Those two boys may not have understood every gauge in that cockpit, but they walked away inspired because they were invited to the cockpit. It is my hope they walked away with clarity and confidence of what is possible for them.

Your team does not need to grasp every detail of your leadership style, but they do need to know you have a system that supports the mission. When they see that, it inspires trust, confidence, and belief in the journey ahead.

And when they see you leading this way, they will want to be invited into the cockpit as well.

If you are curious about how the Momentum Mindset® framework could support you and your team, email me at info@drsamueljones.com with "Meet the Pilot" in the subject line.

Sincerely,

Samuel
