Follow the Flow: From a New Year to a New You

By Dr. Samuel Jones, CSP

There is a scene in Ezekiel 47 that has grabbed my attention as we finish this year: a scene where a guide appears in Ezekiel's vision and invites him to walk alongside what starts as nothing more than a small stream flowing from the Temple.

It did not start as a river. Not a force of nature. Just a stream... barely noticeable. But then something remarkable happens.

The man tells Ezekiel to walk 1,000 cubits, about 1,500 feet. That is the distance of five football fields before anything changes.

In other words, he walked a long way in the shallows before he ever felt a shift. And is that not how growth works? And how does transformation happen at work? We often expect immediate results. We desire instant clarity, instant confidence, instant progress. But the truth is: momentum begins as a stream. Subtle. Unimpressive. Easy to overlook. Yet with every 1,500-foot stretch, the waters rise.

Here are five insights I would like to share with you from this story.

1. The Stream Is Where Change Begins Quietly

At first, Ezekiel is taken to a stream, where he notices a gentle flow: ankle-deep water. This is where everything is manageable, predictable, and comfortable.

This is also where many professionals spend their entire careers:

  • Constantly fight to remain in their comfort zone.
  • Managing tasks but never pursuing their vision.
  • Skimming the surface of their potential

Operating where nothing feels wrong...but nothing feels alive either.

In my coaching, this is the Awareness Stage, where you start noticing the subtle signs that something needs to change. It is small, quiet, almost like a whisper, just like the stream.

2. The First 1,500 Feet Is Knee-Deep Waters: Where You Feel the Resistance

The guide leads Ezekiel another thousand cubits forward. Step after step. Still no dramatic moment. Still no breakthrough. Just steady walking.

But finally, the water rises to Ezekiel's knees. This is the stage where resistance appears at work:

  • Old habits push back.
  • New responsibilities stretch you.
  • Limiting beliefs begin to surface.

You realize awareness is not enough. Your mindset must change now. It is uncomfortable, but it also shows that you are making progress. In Momentum Mindset® language, this is where beliefs start to shift: the moment when you begin replacing "I can't" or "I'm stuck" with something more true and powerful.

3. The Next 1,500 Feet Is Waist-Deep Waters: Where You Must Commit

The guide gestures for Ezekiel to keep walking. Another thousand cubits, another 1,500 feet of steady progress.

This time, the water reaches his waist. Now he can feel the river's power. He feels the pull. He can no longer move casually.

This is where leaders shift from managing work to being shaped by their purpose. In the workplace, this looks like:

  • Taking ownership instead of blaming
  • Communicating with clarity instead of reacting with your emotions
  • Aligning your actions with your values

This is the Aligned Action phase, where your efforts must be intentional. You realize that your comfortable patterns will not carry you forward anymore.

4. The Final 1,500 Feet Is Rivers to Swim In: Where You Let the Current of Momentum Carry You Forward

Then comes the final stretch.

Another thousand cubits.

Another 1,500 feet.

Another season of walking faithfully before anything changes.

And suddenly, Ezekiel can no longer stand.

The water has become a deep, wide, mighty river.

He cannot control it.

He can only trust it.

He can only be carried by the flow.

This is where the Momentum Mindset® becomes fully alive in a leader:

You stop chasing clarity. Clarity now flows to you.

You stop forcing outcomes. Outcomes now align with your actions.

You stop fighting the current. The current now begins supporting you.

This is the stage where you Master the Moments®.

5. When You Flow with the River, Everything You Touch Flourishes

Ezekiel is then led back to the banks of the river, and for the first time, he notices:

Wherever the river flows, life appears.

Dead places are brought back to life.

Saltwater is transformed into freshwater.

Trees bear fruit each month.

Healing happens along the banks.

At work, this looks like:

  • New awareness in your conversations brings clarity.
  • Teams are now expanding their leadership under your influence.
  • Meetings now restore energy instead of draining it.

You do not reach this through forcing, grinding, or striving. Instead, you do it by walking the 1,500-foot stretches, letting depth grow gradually. By allowing the small stream inside you to become a river.

Why This Matters for the New Year and Why I Am Writing to You

This past year, I have walked 1,500-foot stretches with many clients, just like the guide walked with Ezekiel.

Some entered ankle-deep, aware that change was needed.

Some were knee-deep, facing resistance and belief systems.

Some were waist-deep, emphasizing their alignment and purpose.

And others entered the river to swim, carried by the current they had once feared.

My role?

To walk alongside them.

To mark the distance.

To help them notice the increased depths.

To guide them into deeper waters of:

  • Awareness
  • Alignment
  • Action
  • Identity
  • Confidence
  • And sustainable leadership momentum

As I wrote in Momentum Mindset®: Get Unstuck. Move. Achieve When It Matters Most: fundamental transformation starts internally before it ever shows up externally, and leaders thrive when they align their thinking, purpose, and actions with who they are becoming.

That is the journey Ezekiel experienced, and that is the journey I am inviting you to join.

Final Word: The Stream Is Already Flowing, Keep Walking

If this past year seemed like just a small stream, do not overlook its significance.

If you have not seen the breakthrough yet, just keep going.

If your clarity has not arrived, take the next step.

Ezekiel did not experience depth until after 1,500 feet, three separate times. Breakthroughs do not happen instantly. It is incremental, just beyond the next stretch.

As you enter the new year, remember:

  • Streams become rivers for those willing to walk the distance.
  • Momentum starts as a gentle stream before turning into a powerful force.
  • You are already connected to the source; now, it is time to take the next step.
  • You are never alone. I am right there with you on this journey.

Here is to deeper waters, greater clarity, and unstoppable momentum.

Sincerely,

Samuel
